About this scholarship

The scholarship was established by contributions from colleagues, friends and former students in honour of Hugh Earle Brandon, BMus, LRAM, FTCL, AASA. Hugh Brandon (1906-1984) was a staff member of the University of Queensland from 1945 to 1973. During that time, he was the inaugural Head of the Department of Music from 1955 to 1966, and Dean of the Faculty of Music in 1970. Hugh was responsible for reviving the Queensland University Musical Society following the Second World War, and conducted that choir from 1950 until 1965, when he became patron. Hugh was the first recipient of the Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Queensland when he was awarded an honorary degree in 1970. Over his long career Hugh Brandon worked tirelessly throughout Queensland for improved standards in music, and made a significant contribution to the musical life of Queensland through his work at the University, as an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (1941-1984), as Conductor of the Brisbane Bach Choir (1931-1946), and as Organist and Choirmaster at St Andrew's Presbyterian (now Uniting) Church, Creek Street, Brisbane (1945-1978). More information about Hugh is available in the Australian Dictionary of Biography and in Hugh Brandon: His Contribution to Musical Life in Brisbane by Lucille Schloss. Following his retirement, friends and colleagues established the Hugh Brandon Prize, which was awarded for the first time in 1980 and most recently in 2015.
