Her aptitude and dedication, coupled with her mother's support, saw her graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Diploma and Licentiate Certificates. Her ability was also recognised by the ABC, who featured her in radio broadcasts. Joy pursued her musical studies in the UK, eventually meeting and marrying her husband there. Returning to Australia, she raised six children and as a result, her musical career receded into the background. However, there were still occasional performances at public gatherings, such as parties and meetings of the Labour party. It was at one such function that she met Norman Bushman who, with his passion for music, recognised her talent and encouraged her to pursue her musical career.
