About this scholarship
Established in 2024 through a gift from Simon and Alice Siu, together with Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland under the Queensland Commitment Scholarship Match Initiative. The Scholarship honours Simon Siu, an esteemed Associate Professor of Surgery at Griffith University, who has dedicated over 45 years to the medical field, both as a senior consultant at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and as a researcher in colorectal cancer for over 25 years. His unwavering commitment to education is evident from his extensive teaching career, his 30 years as an Australian Medical Council's Clinical examiner and his editorship of a comprehensive 556-page book on the history of the Divisions of Surgery at Royal Brisbane Hospital. Recognising the financial challenges faced by medical students, Simon Siu, established the Simon Siu Medicine Scholarship at The University of Queensland, his alma mater from which he graduated in 1971. Motivated by a desire to "pay it forward" and fuelled by his own experiences, including his time in Bundaberg and his tenure as a senior visiting surgeon, he aims to alleviate the burden of costly medical education. His scholarship is a testament to his generosity and his hope to support future generations in navigating the evolving and often expensive landscape of medicine. The Scholarship will be maintained by income generated from an endowment fund.
